The Coalition of Afghan Women's Protest Movements Calls for Urgent Support for At-Risk Activists in Iran
The Independent Coalition of Afghan Women's Protest Movements has issued a statement warning that a number of Afghan women protesters, journalists, civil activists, and human rights defenders, who were forced to flee after the Taliban's takeover, are now facing "catastrophic" conditions and escalating threats in Iran.
In the statement released on Tuesday, 3 Saratan (24 June 2025), the coalition highlighted that these individuals, particularly women activists, are living in a vulnerable and uncertain state without access to residency documents, legal support, or basic necessities. The coalition warned that regional security tensions, internal unrest in Iran, and repressive actions by the police have heightened the dangers for these groups.
The coalition stated: "Those who once raised their voices for freedom and equality on the streets of Kabul and Mazar are now forgotten by the international community, living in darkness, silence, and under constant threat and uncertainty."
The coalition has called on international organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the European Union, and democratic governments, to establish urgent support mechanisms to facilitate the safe evacuation and resettlement of these activists. It also urged the Iranian government to adhere to its humanitarian obligations and refrain from arbitrary detentions and forced deportations of refugees.
